Description
Rare is a more beautiful sight in the Sonoran Desert than that of a Desert Ironwood (Olneya tesota) tree in full bloom. The Ironwood tree is rare in itself, ranging between 1,000 and 2,500 feet in elevation and only in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, California, and Mexico.
None of this species in the desert around Tucson, Arizona bloomed at all last year, and this year they were an explosion of pink, red, magenta and even white flowers. Ironwood trees are the Methuselah plants of the Sonoran desert. While only growing to a height of 30 plus feet (though I know of one perhaps twice that size), they put roots down hundreds of feet and live to be sometimes over 1,500 years of age. This example was seen in the Tucson Mountains, west of Tucson, Arizona. Nearby, Ironwood National Monument is named for this tree.
